What is a disability?

How do you define a disability?

Monday, July 9, 2012

I am starting a blog topic on disabled kids. I have worked for years with developmentally and physically disabled kids from ages 14-22. I would enjoy hearing your comments as they occur to you after you tune in to my blog. Thanks. It begins tomorrow.
Trust your intuition--your inner voice. I was walking down a street in NYC when I felt a funny feeling that I should cross the street. It was broad daylight and the sidewalks were brimming with people. I ignored my gut feelings and kept walking. Just then a handful of rocks came flying at me, hitting me all over. I turned around and saw a bunch of kids running away. I wasn't hurt but I took it as a wake-up call to listen to my intuition.

Hi Again,
Forgot to mention that I went to Italy for 2 weeks. Stayed at a villa just outside of Florence. Florence. Ahhhhhhh, deep breathing. What a magical city. Little winding streets reveal surprises everywhere, from leather shops, to flower gardens, to tiny, elegant espresso cafes. Walked until my feet were raw. The David--oh my--what a thrill. Medici castle, another beauty. Horseback riding past Caruso's home. You can taste the history. Speaking of tasting, I and my friend took a week's worth of cooking classes at the Villa Pandolfini. Chefs Luciano, Marizio, and Fabrizio taught us how to make homemade pasta, tiramisu, Tuscan chicken, all kinds of risoto, and everything fresh, from basil to sage. I recommend the villa to anyone. It IS a 15 minute walk up a steep hill, but it is worth it. The village is charming and the gelato--well--need I say more?

I'm back!

Hi Everyone,
I had a challenge last spring (2011) which resulted in a hysterechtomy. Something like that really made me take stock of what is important. I know it sounds like a cliche but it's true. I'm looking at retirement and reinventing myself--AGAIN. I realized that it is never too late to find out who you are. So, onward and upward. New projects on the horizon. Looking at what are my true gifts at this point and seeing how I can use them to help others. Because, in the final analysis, helping others is what makes my life mean something.

Novel writing conference

Hi Everyone!
I attended an excellent novel-writing conference today put on my Southwest Writers. I was looking for inpsiration to begin a new book. I think I found it! I'll let you know what it's going to be about soon.

My memoir, Avoid Mosquitoes--and Other Impossibilities has gotten wonderful reviews on amazon.com and has won two awards (Editor's Choice and Rising Star). Thank you everyone! If you haven't read it yet, I hear it's a great read! :)

I wrote another children's book this summer. My aunt, who is a marvelous artist, is painting pictures for it. It's a picture book designed for 3-6 year olds. I won't mention the title yet--but it's coming soon.
